Legendary Playing Career

Chris Weinke etched his name in college football history by winning the 2000 Heisman Trophy at Florida State as the oldest winner at age 28, leading the Seminoles to a 1999 national championship.

His professional career spanned seven NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers (2001-2006) and San Francisco 49ers (2007), where he gained valuable experience as a quarterback before transitioning to coaching.

This unique path from late-blooming star to pro player equipped Weinke with insights that now benefit emerging talents at Georgia Tech.

Proven Coaching Resume

Weinke launched his coaching career at IMG Academy (2010-2014), serving as director of football, head coach, and offensive coordinator, training future NFL stars like Russell Wilson and Cam Newton.

He advanced to the NFL as quarterbacks coach for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams (2015-2016), then contributed to national champion Alabama (2017) as an offensive analyst and Tennessee (2018-2020) coaching running backs and quarterbacks.

Joining Georgia Tech in 2022 as quarterbacks coach, he earned promotions to co-offensive coordinator in 2023 and assistant head coach in 2024, building a track record across high school, college, and pro levels.

Transforming Georgia Tech QBs

At Georgia Tech, Weinke has elevated the quarterback position dramatically. In 2023, he developed Haynes King into a record-setting star with 2,842 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, earning All-ACC honors and ACC Offensive Player of the Year.

In 2024, true freshman Aaron Philo shone under Weinke's guidance, leading game-winning drives against top foes like No. 4 Miami and NC State in upset victories, helping fuel a top-10 national offense.

With Faulkner's exit creating an OC vacancy in late 2025, Weinke's familiarity with the staff, players, and scheme makes him the frontrunner for promotion, potentially retaining talents like Philo and recruiting prospects such as Cole Bergeron.

Why Weinke for OC?

Weinke's three years as co-OC have coincided with Georgia Tech's offensive surge, including winning seasons in 2023 and 2024. His rapport with QBs and history of player development position him to seamlessly lead the full offense.

While new to calling plays solo, his extensive experience mitigates risks, offering continuity amid portal uncertainties. Insiders view him as a long-term asset for the Yellow Jackets' rise.
