Ending West Coast Operations
Avelo Airlines ceased West Coast flights from Burbank Hollywood Airport by October 20, 2025, with full base closure by early December. This move consolidates resources on core East Coast bases at secondary airports, addressing prior challenges in maintaining dual-coast operations without middle connectivity.
Network director Mike Corcoran emphasized scaling smaller East Coast airports to build brand relevance. By reallocating capacity, Avelo aims to drive customer growth and awareness, as shared at the Routes’ TakeOff North America conference.
Impacts include route drops at new North Carolina bases like Concord-Padgett, but sustained success at hubs like Wilmington International Airport signals positive trajectory.
This strategic pivot positions Avelo for organic margin improvements without special financing.
Capital Raise Fuels Expansion
In September 2025, Avelo finalized a major funding round, the largest since its Series A, from a new strategic investor. CEO Andrew Levy noted it strengthens liquidity to serve underserved markets priced out by legacy carriers.
Proceeds target scheduled services, technology, and customer enhancements, building on 2024's near-breakeven results and 2025 profitability. Upcoming loyalty programs and co-branded cards will diversify revenue.
Since 2021, Avelo has flown nearly eight million passengers across 47 cities, ranking #1 in on-time performance and lowest cancellations in 2024 per Anuvu data.
New Jets and Network Plans
Avelo ordered 50 Embraer E195-E2 jets in September 2025, becoming the US launch customer, with deliveries starting mid-2027 at one per month. Targeting 140-seat configurations, these efficient aircraft will base at 20 potential secondary airports.
The E2s enable national expansion, including a West Coast return in a more effective model. New routes from October-December 2025, plus bases in Charlotte and North Carolina, underscore East Coast focus.
Avelo's model offers unbundled options like Stretch seating and pets in cabin, prioritizing time and cost savings for travelers.
