What Is Vanguard University?

Vanguard University of Southern California is a private Protestant Christian university located in Costa Mesa, Orange County, and was the first four-year college in the county.[1] Originally founded as a Bible school, it has grown into a comprehensive liberal arts institution that integrates Christian faith with academic and professional training.[1][2]

The university is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission and requires a core curriculum that includes American politics and history, theology, fine arts, and public speaking.[1] Vanguard’s mission emphasizes spiritual formation, leadership, and service, offering small classes, professor-mentors, and a residential campus community just a few miles from the beach in Southern California.[2]

Academics and Programs

Vanguard is organized into four main schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Patty Arvielo School of Business and Communication, the School of Education, and the School of Theology and Ministry.[1] It offers a variety of undergraduate majors, graduate programs, and adult degree-completion options, including programs in business, communication, psychology, education, and ministry.[1][2]

Graduate offerings include organizational psychology and clinical psychology, which are based at a satellite campus in nearby Santa Ana, expanding access for working professionals.[1] The academic calendar follows a semester structure, with fall terms beginning in late August and key events such as convocation chapel and traditional breaks built into the schedule.[5][6]

Recent Developments and Impact

Vanguard’s School of Education has recently expanded its teacher preparation pathways, including single subject, multiple subject, education specialist, and a pioneering PK–3 credential program.[4] According to a 2025 credential workshop, Vanguard’s PK–3 program is the first of its kind in California, and the university now partners with more than 70 school districts statewide to place candidates for student teaching.[4]

The university is also investing in facilities and student life, with the Freed Center being developed as the primary athletics hub, featuring a large gymnasium and training spaces for student-athletes.[1] Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2025, which celebrated over 500 graduates, underscore Vanguard’s ongoing role in preparing students for careers and service across sectors such as education, business, ministry, and nonprofit leadership.[3]
